Possible career change????

This last week I took on a new job- soccer referee!!!! No, I am not kidding.
Here's how it happened: I work 2 days a month for SL County Parks and Rec with their activities for adults with disabilities. Since I was on the employee list, my friend I work with suggested that I could referee soccer!

I made it clear from the initial phone call that I had very little athletic ability (I mean, check out the home movies, people!!!) The first day can best be described as ROUGH. Before the games can start, there are 8 goals that need to be set up, and they are not the plastic pop-up kind. These are big metal poles (bring back any circus memories, Debo?) that you have to connect and then drive into the ground like stakes, then attach a net, with velcro straps here and there, so it doesn't fall off. Well, they they running behind so tensions were high, my friend was yelling at me, yeah... you get the idea!

After 20 minutes of watching a game I was on my own! Really, not knowing much more about soccer than I did before! Thankfully, I was coaching 3rd and 4th grade games and I relied on them as I think they knew more than I did! And when I was done, I got to watch Carter, Deborah's 6 yr old son, play in his soccer game. Overall, it was fun, but a shock to my system. Plus, running up and down the field- great exercise!!!

The 2nd day was a lot smoother and a lot more fun! I would referee again if they asked, definitely. No one threw stuff at me or swore at me, so I see that as a good sign.... But I think I loved it because it was unlike anything that I had ever done before and that will I likely do again. No, I don't think a career change is in the works, but make the most of what comes to you, right?
